Lord Mayors Cup (LR)
Moriarty settled well back on the rails in the 15-horse field. He was shuffled back to last at the 600m and was facing a huge task especially considering the lack of any early pace (first 1400m 1:29.83). He looked for a run in the centre on straightening, which finally presented at the 200m. He then produced a great finishing burst to win going away by over a length, putting up a good performance considering the sprint home tactics of the race. The New Zealand-trained mare Zonza led and set a slow tempo, before grabbing a break and the 200m. She looked the winner at that stage and was only caught in the closing stages, finishing a sound second. Strike The Stars also raced at the tail of the large field before going to the extreme outside rounding the home turn. He then ran on nicely, in the sprint home, for a good third just beating home Vatuvei, who ran well on for fourth. *ANZ
