Racing & Sports expert selections.
RACE 1 - METALART (1) was a touch plain when resuming but the form he showed when last in work was more than good enough to feature in a race of this nature. Is yet to miss a drum in six starts around this circuit and gets some weight relief with the 2kg claim. A return to the winners' stall would not surprise. SICILIAN (13) has hit the frame in both starts since joining the new stable and looks to be working up to another victory. Top-three aspirations. HOLY RACKET (6) should be able to sit up on speed from the inside alley and will give backers a sight. GUMDROPS (9) will find this easier than what she faced down south and may run a race while fresh.
RACE 2 - TAVS (13) has been super impressive putting consecutive Eagle Farm victories together and is racing with a lot of confidence of late. Strips fitter fourth-up from the spell and Callow has been on board for both those wins and sticks. Only needs some luck from the carpark draw to be playing a major role in the finish. THE INFLICTOR (5) has won two from two over this course and distance and rarely puts in a poor one. Gets Rawiller on from the inside marble and should give this a mighty shake. I AM ARTIE (2) doesn't know how to run a bad race and is a must for the multiples. SIR ARTIE (12) returns and looks best of the rest.
RACE 3 - The $160,000 Listed Bill Carter Stakes. SUNRAYS (1) strung three wins together on the bounce here to start the career before being tipped out for further time to furnish. Ran into a pretty smart one at Group 3 level when resuming and will have come on with that run now in the locker. Rates the testing material. HA'PENNY HATCH (2) put back-to-back Eagle Farm victories together before not being too far away at Listed level there last time out. Thornton has been in the irons for all three outings to date and sticks. Looms as the main danger. DON'TDOUBTHELADY (3) is building up a handy record with the only failure coming in the Magic Millions back in January. Strips fitter second-up and can make her presence felt. The well-related CHATTERLEY (11) (half to G2 winner and 2xG1 placed Mamaragan) was well in the betting on debut and where there's smoke there's fire. Keep safe with the Waller/McDonald combination.
RACE 4 - The $160,000 Listed Chief De Beers. SPACEWALK (2) has a handy record over this distance range with two wins and six placings from 11 outings and will be ready to peak now fourth-up from the spell. Gun hoop McDonald reunites and should be right there when the judge calls a halt. The well-related APPIN GIRL (7) (half to G2 winner Sesar) resumes here but has won two from three when first-up and is more than capable on her day. Can run a big race while fresh. CANNONBALL (1) also hails from a handy family (full to G2 winner Marine One) and will strip fitter third-up. Has a bit of class on this field and a return to form would not shock. NETTUNO (5) has placed three from three over this trip and gets Williams on to navigate from the sticky alley. Top-three hope with any luck in running. MANHOOD (10) best of the rest from the inside alley.
RACE 5 - MAYFAIR (1) is first-up here but has been plying his trade in much harder Sydney and Melbourne Group races and will appreciate the sharp drop back in grade in this. Revved up for this with two recent trial placings and gets the reliable Waterhouse/Bott/Clark combination. Looks the one they all have to run down. AMELITA (3) saves her best form for this journey with two wins and a second from five attempts and is another to drop back in company. Rates among the leading hopes. BELEGATO (5) strips fitter second-up from the break and is usually thereabouts. In the mix for some minor money. MISHANI LILY (9) best of the rest in a race with only a handful of chances.
RACE 6 - The $200,000 Group 3 Fillies & Mares Mile. VIVY AIR (9) has gotten better with each run this time in work and might have found her right race here. Drawn to get all the favours from the inside alley and will be ready to peak fourth-up from the spell. Likely to play a big role in the outcome. JENNILALA (4) returned in good order with a Group 3 victory before not being too far off them at Group 2 level at the latest effort. Terrific chance to get back on the winners' list. THALASSOPHILE (6) strips fitter second-up and gets the deadly Waller/McDonald combination. Top-three candidate on best form. PULCHRITUDINOUS (2) is a bit hit or miss but will find this easier than recent Group 1 and 2 outings. Can do better this time. EXOTIQUE MISS (8) has placed two from three around this circuit and may fill the frame with luck in transit.
RACE 7 - The $200,000 Group 2 The Roses. BENAGIL (1) was super impressive taking out the Australasian Oaks at the most recent outing and looks to have found her pet distance range now. Winning rider Zahra stays in the saddle and will be high on confidence following that Group 1 success. Should be in this for a long way. The penny has dropped for the well-related PHILIA (6) (half to 3xG1 winner Duais) who has strung a hat-trick of victories together this campaign and looks ready for the step-up to the 2000m now. Hard to ignore winning form. VERONA ROSE (5) wasn't too far away in the ATC Oaks and steps back in trip here. Should be hitting the line with gusto. POLYMNIA (10) is a consistent conveyance who is yet to miss the top-five in ten career starts and is yet to put in a flat one. Include in calculations. CHURCHILL'S CHOICE (4) strips fitter third-up and hails from an astute barn. Keep very safe.
RACE 8 - The feature race on the card, the $1 million Group 1 Doomben Cup. After a plain first-up performance ANTINO (1) bounced right back to form with a dominant display in the G2 Hollindale last time out. Is two from two around this circuit and has saluted in all conditions. Shinn stays on board following that last-start success and just needs a bit of luck in running from the wide draw to be prominent again. You know what you are going to get with PRIDE OF JENNI (12) and she draws favourably from the inside marble. Should be at her peak now and will run her usual speedy race. FAWKNER PARK (3) has been right there in all four runs this campaign in quality company. Has to be included. BOIS D'ARGENT (4) saves his best form for this trip and looks one at odds. LINDERMANN (2) next in line in a stirring edition of this time-honoured event.
RACE 9 - The $300,000 Group 3 BRC Sprint. WAR MACHINE (11) was heavily supported when having the first run for the new stable and didn't let supporters down with a solid Caulfield victory. Has three wins and a placing from six attempts at the trip and maps well for Shinn from gate six. Will be right there at the business end. IKNOWASTAR (4) is drawn to get a cosy run in transit from the inside draw and hails from an in-form yard. Can run a race while fresh. COLEMAN (12) has a bit of quality over most of these and looks to get in well at the weights. In the mix. FREEDOM RALLY (3) next best with the Gollan/Maloney combination.
