Racing & Sports expert selections.
RACE 1 - DAYTONA PETE (2) showed plenty of ability in his last campaign, ending with a strong win over 1200m here in this grade. He's had a quiet trial coming in and the stable's strike jockey is booked for his return. Can sit just off the speed and pick up where he left off last campaign. KEEP ITA MYSTERY (1) was too good over this course and distance last time out in BM66+ grade, running over the top to score by 0.4L The form out of that race has been very strong and Gaerth's 2kg claim comes in handy. Can go back-to-back without surprising. BLACK ORA (4) jumped $1.26 fresh at Pinjarra and was a class above on the Scarpside, running away to win by 2.2L. This is tougher, but Pike sticks and she maps for a lovely run once again. Sure to play a leading role. FLAGSHIP (3) is some niggle back to this trip but was odds-on last start when winning. His form reads well for a race like this. NICCIMOTA (7) led and bolted in at this trip last start and has to be included.
RACE 2 - Time for the 2YOs. STATEWIDE (1) just missed first-up when flashing late from midfield, beaten 1.6L three weeks ago. He draws a better barrier this time around and the drop in trip shouldn't be an issue. Can land the knockout blow this time. BLOW ME KISSES (5) led and capitulated on debut back in November and was sent straight to the paddock. Her latest trial with the blinkers on was very impressive and the shades remain on for raceday today. Speedy customer who will be hard to gun down. DELTASON (2) is likely to get a long way back as he has done in recent races, though this is an easier event on paper. He was very good in a similar race on debut and he's expected to be doing his best work late in the race. PERFECT SISTER (8) is on debut for Dan Morton and moved well at the trials coming in. Can make an impression on debut. VALANNE DAWN (9) gets Pike in the saddle for her debut and has to be included.
RACE 3 - PROSPECTOR'S PICK (5) ended last campaign on a disappointing note after a strong fresh win over 1200m. His trial coming into this campaign was great and Pike hops in the saddle for his fresh run. Drawn to get every chance and can resume with a big win fresh. SIX SHOOTER (6) is another horse on the rise, being a 3YO who was tried in stakes grade to end last campaign. He'll be fitter for two trials coming in and Brad Parnham partners him on resumption. Looks to have plenty of upside and can resume on a winning note. TAWKIN' JIBBERISH (3) is hard to knock on recent form, starting favourite in this grade last start and ending up 2.3L off the winner. The inside draw is a big tick and she'll make her own luck up on the speed. Can give them something to catch. SHOOTING SPIRIT (2) was a winner at this track and trip three starts back and has claims. AVOIDANCE (1) was good in a recent trial and is a two-time winner fresh. Worth including.
RACE 4 - BONDI PLUNGE (3) just missed when sitting on the speed throughout in an Apprentice Series race at the midweeks 17 days ago, beaten 0.3L. Brad Parnham hops in the saddle now and she's won 2/4 second-up. Looks well placed and can go one better now. LET'S TALK (4) sat in behind the speed last start and was too good, winning by 0.8L on resumption over 1000m. The rise in trip is now issue and he looks to be open to plenty of improvement. Lightly raced an improving, he's an attractive commodity in this event. HYMNS OF ELADDAIR (1) returned to winning ways last start over 1400m at this track and gets the blinkers on back in grade today. Pike sticking is a positive sign and he's expected to be in the finish once again. OCEAN GODDESS (9) looks to have ability and will be better for the fresh run. Can feature down in the handicap. CRYPTIC JOY (7) hasn't been far away lately and has to be respected.
RACE 5 - SPEAK TO ME (1) resumed today and was a fresh winner over 1200m last campaign. His recent trial coming in was handy and he jumped the equal favourite in a good form race to end last campaign. Draw is sticky, but the ratings are with him and he's sure to make an impression. SOSO LUCKY (2) continues to play the role of Bridesmaid, finishing 1.8L off the winner when an odds-on favourite at Geraldton last time out. While she was below her best there, her figures prior stack up in this field. Blinkers go on now as she approaches D-Day. MASTERLY (5) can find the front from a good gate as he did last start when scoring by 0.6L at this track and trip. Steve Parnham replaces the apprentice hoop today and there's no reason why he can't go on with the job. WESTERN POWER (3) was solid first-up when only 1.4L off the winner and has claims with CJP in the saddle. SIMPLY THINKIN' (4) should appreciate the rise in trip and maps for a lovely run.
RACE 6 - The feature of the day now, the WA Derby where MACHINE GUN GRACIE (4) aims to do the Oaks-Derby double. She was taken on in the Oaks but it only brought out the best in her, running away to win impressively 14 days ago. Looks to get all the favours again and can claim both WA's 3YO Classics. SAIL SESSION (1) is the pick of the boys having won the Melvista Stakes last time out. The time was a little slow there, but he looks a horse who will improve with a more genuine gallop on offer. Gets all the favours off the inside and appears the main danger. MAXWHOOSHTAPIN (2) was closing late in the Melvista and is another who may appreciate a stronger gallop if it comes in the Derby. He should relish the rise in trip and still has some upside. Can be in the finish. FUNCHAL (6) took the race to Machine Gun Gracie in the Oaks and didn't go down without a fight. Worth plenty of thought. NET ZERO (3) is next best.
RACE 7 - CORRECT CHOICE (9) sat back and rounded up his rivals with ease over this course and distance last time out, winning by 1.6L. He boasts a good third-up record and the last-start win suggested there was more in story. Can continue his rise through the ranks. BLAZING EMERALD (7) is hard to knock on recent form, finishing in the quinella her past six outings. She's a track and trip winner two back and Pike remains in the saddle. She'll give a bold sight from the front. OUR ROCKY BAY (3) just missed last start when beaten in a photo finish over 1400m. He was favourite there following a narrow defeat at this track and trip two back. Racing well and can bounce back to winning ways. MACCIATEAU (4) was a surprise winner first-up but should appreciate the rise in trip. No reason why he can't bring up back-to-back wins. STYLISH LORD (5) is usually around the mark and he's expected to be thereabouts again today.
RACE 8 - ALL PLAY (3) ended last campaign in blistering fashion and his recent trial suggests he can pick up where he left off. The inside draw is a big tick and they've tinkered with his feet to get him right. Ticks plenty of boxes and looks ready to build on his picket fence. GINNIVAN (1) wasn't disgraced in the Rock Magic Stakes when beaten 2.2L behind Quokka hopefuls. Sticking to this trip looks ideal and he'll find this much easier. He has to carry the weight, but he's a classy galloper and he'll be tough to catch. BRAVE STRIKE (8) is on the quick turnaround following a 0.2L defeat last start at this track and trip. This is tougher, but Pike sticks and she'll be flashing late in the race. GOLDEN VALE (9) drops in trip today and ticks plenty of boxes down in the weights. TOROPA (7) is better than what she showed at the end of last campaign and can return in good order.
RACE 9 - KEEP ATTACKING (1) won well to end last campaign and turned in a nice trial in readiness for his return. He flies fresh and CJP sticks from the recent trial. Likely to get back in the run, but can pick up from where he left off 126 days ago. JAZ SESSION (7) made it a hat-trick of wins with an impressive 1.7L victory here as favourite most recently. She's a mare on the rise and she still has improvement to come being lightly raced. Stable and jockey are firing on all cylinders right now and she's the main danger. NOBELLITY (10) got the job done by 2.2L here last start after leading throughout a fortnight ago. Drawn well again today and remains down in the weights. Will give them something to catch. MADAME MAGIC (8) was very impressive in her recent trial and can make a statement on resumption. CANNY ROCK (5) will need some luck but he can't be discounted on form.
