Racing & Sports expert selections.
RACE 1 - MOMENT OF TRUTH (4) brings two narrow defeats from Rockhampton. She was again heavily bet, and the extra 200m shouldn't prove an issue. Has a 1.5kg claim for an in-form apprentice, and is suited. REPLACE THE ACE (3) led and was too good at this track/trip 14 days ago. A top hoop sticks aboard, and he will control the race. Tough to catch. ACCLIMATISE (2) was beaten narrowly at Townsville over 1400m, and the former Victorian may appreciate the longer journey. Stanley rides for the first time. LEICA BITA FUN (5) didn't get into it at Rockhampton 7 days ago, but his Gladstone effort prior reads okay. He's in the mix at a price.
RACE 2 - DETERMINATION (1) is a former Waller-trained galloper who would win comfortably at best. He needed the first-up outing at Rockhampton, and Wiggins replaces the 3kg apprentice in a key jockey switch. Fitter and quick improvement is likely. OVERIMPATIENT (3) is a former Victorian who led and went close at Rockhampton first up. He folded up there last time, but will be better for it. Draws low, and a much better effort is likely. GLAD RAG DOLL (6) resumed at Townsville in solid order and has more to give. Maps well and carries just 51.5kgs with the 3kg claim. POLLY HOFFA (9) led and went close here two back, and that would have her in the finish. The betting will be key with the two debutants.
RACE 3 - HENRY'S BLADE (2) is a former Victorian resuming for a top barn. He's placed fresh and has trialled sharply with race-rider Stanley aboard. Wins comfortably if presented on song. TORQUE OF DREAMS (6) is a leader who deserves the Maiden win here, bet a $2 favourite. Draws low, and she keeps improving. SET THE SAILS (3) found better form beaten 2L at Townsville first-up. Butler rides today and the longer sprint suits. He's proven second up and can make the finish. HE GOES BOOM (1) will be around the mark if he puts his best foot forward. Wiggins is a positive jockey switch.
RACE 4 - ZELEZNY (7) placed at Rockhampton first-up and then won a trial before disappointing here as a $2.3 favourite. He's been freshened and has a key jockey switch to Wiggins. Finds a suitable assignment. SET FOR LIFE (2) debuts and creates plenty of interest. He brings a spacious trial win from Rockhampton, and the betting will be key. SPIRITED (11) resumes owning an easy trial win at Townsville. She's switched from the Munce yard and has placed fresh. Gets Butler and is good enough. RED BEAUTY (4) resumes and has switched from a Victorian stable. Her debut effort at Ballarat rates well enough and she'd be a chance presented on song.
RACE 5 - LAMENTUM (3) over raced in the early stages but found the quinella first-up in a strong form race at Rockhampton. He's further improved, and this is easier. Has a 1.5kg claim and stripping fitter, he can go one better. ANSWERING (6) was quickly back on track, narrowly beaten in a CL2 here over 1300m. Led and missed a whisker at the track/trip three back and Butler is reunited. SENSATIONABULL (2) surprised winning a 60 at Townsville and then found one better there in a 55. He will use the rails gate, and the shorter sprint shouldn't bother. He can make the finish again. Wiggins is back on FLYING MAPLE (4) and she'd be a geneuine hope finding her best.
RACE 6 - AGE OF AQUARIUS (2) improved again when narrowly beaten behind Latin Love (scratched from this), this track/trip. The blinkers go straight back on, and he's left the one to beat. NINE CARATS (6) maps for a soft run and is knocking on the door. Has a handy 2kg claim and is good enough. MR GREY (3) just missed in a CL1 at Rockhampton, and that stacks up. Benefits from a 2kg claim. MOON OVER MATILDA (5) will find it easier today and will be around the mark.
RACE 7 - BOOMING LAD (1) races forward and he bounced straight back winning a CL3 here, third-up. The 2kg claim is handy in a touch easier and fitter again he rates to give a big sight. RUBUNKAR (3) led and was nudged out here in a 60, and Butler sticks aboard. He will take pegging back. JUPITUS (2) resumes and has switched from the Waller yard. He's trialled at Rockhampton, and Wiggins' booking suggests he's ready to go. The late betting will be key. UPSTART LEGEND (7) missed a nose behind Booming Lad, and forgive the effort 10 days ago when she resented the kickback. Has a handy 2kg claim and can't be ruled out.
RACE 8 - HELLISH (3) led and continued on his winning ways first up, winning this grade at Rockhampton, backed off the map. He got too far back at Doomben following (SP $21), and is much better suited today. He's proven third-up and has the early speed to clear the awkward barrier. Freshened and can bounce back. STICK TO YOUR GUNS (6) won and Townsville at this level and then just missed there following. He races forward and gets in light with the 3kg claim. A winning chance. LETMELETGO (1) has won three of his last four starts and led the latest in a Rockhampton Open. Has a handy gate and a 1.5kg claim. He's also a hope. REAL KEY (5) peaks, and the veteran is going well enough to consider.
