Trainer Sharon Taylor felt the 1200m of The Joey was always going to be too slick for the return of Searchin’ Roc’s but she was rapt with the mare's performance and is looking forward to stepping her out to her favourite trip at Belmont on Saturday.
The six-year-old, who helped launch Sharon Taylor's comeback to training after a six-year break, ran ninth to Twain's Angel, but was doing her best work late and with the threat of a rain affected track, she's cherry-ripe to tackle the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m).
"I think the 1400m suits better than the 1200m," Taylor said to Racing WA.
"She's not a true 1200m sprinter and 1400m is her pet distance.
"I was rapt with her in the Joey and her closing sectionals were impressive.
"She had to drop back from a wide barrier and hit the line strong.
"It wasn't a gut-busting run, she was looked after."
Searchin' Roc's has drawn barrier one and in a capacity field of 16 starters she'll be ridden by Jessica Valas.
"She just needs a little luck from the draw," Taylor said.
"Jess (Valas) has to pop her out and away from the fence at some stage."
Tab Fixed Odds has Searchin' Roc's listed as a $61 outsider, West Star the $2.80 favourite ahead of last year's Belmont Sprint champion Western Empire ($4.80).
2023 Belmont Sprint winner, Bustler and The Boss Lady are next at $8 with Magnificent Andy $9.
Taylor says Searchin' Roc's has thrived since the Joey.
"I couldn't be happier with her," Taylor said.
"I can't get her any better and she's improved.
"She's flying at home."
With Searchin' Roc's adept on wet going, Taylor hopes predicted rain for Perth arrives this week.
Searchin' Roc's appreciates some sting out of the ground with five wins on heavy and soft going.
Her previous win came on a heavy rated track in the Listed Idyllic Prince Stakes (1300) last August.
Searchin' Roc's transferred to Taylor's stable after a successful stint with Jim Taylor.
She won the Group 3 Peters Stakes (1500m), Listed Farnley Stakes (1400m) and Listed Idyllic Prince Stakes (1300m) under the Bullsbrook trainer's care.
