Rope Them In launches Quokka bid in Albany's Bluff Knoll

Getting Albany trainer Albany Steve Wolfe excited is the challenge of ending Overpasses WA Dominance and his winning streak in the west after Rope Them In secured a slot in the $5 million Quokka (1200m) at Ascot on April 26, the state’s richest race.

Under the successful guidance of Sydney supremo Bjorn Baker, currently in the middle of a hot national training spell, Overpass, in a two-year reign, has not been beaten at Ascot after winning the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) twice and last year's Quokka.

Rope Them In is the new kid on the block for Wolfe, a four-year-old on the rise, who demonstrated his sprinting prowess in the Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) and wasn't far off Overpass when a fast closing fourth in the Winterbottom Stakes five months ago.

Rope Them In, who kicks off his return campaign at home in Albany in Sunday's $400,000 Wellington and Reeves Bluff Knoll (1099m), is the first horse locked away for the Quokka after Wolfe, a part-owner, signed a deal after strong interest from slot holders, Tabtouch.

"It's very exciting for us and we're privileged to have the Tabtouch slot," Wolfe said on Tabradio.

"They rang about four weeks ago when we were sniffing around and didn't get a lot of interest.

"We were pretty lucky Tabtouch picked our horse, they had several choices and it was pretty much finalised last week.

"It's great for Albany and it's great to be able to represent the slot and town with a good horse, I hope he can do us proud."

Wolfe believes the $400,000 Bluff Noll slot race, WA's richest country race, is the ideal launching pad for Rope Them In's rich campaign ambitions.

A son of boom sire, Playing God, Rope Them In took the first steps towards his pinnacle race in the Quokka with a warm up trial at Albany.

"His trial wasn't quite what I would have liked," Wolfe said.

"He's probably improved significantly since, but the biggest thing is it might be a yard short for him, but I'm sure he'll be rocketing home.

"I think he is at his best at 1200m or 1400m.

"He's a beauty and we haven't seen the best of him yet.

'He's very classy and I just hope he can take the next step."

If Rope Them In can't win the Bluff Knoll, Wolfe thinks Devine Belief, a Playing God filly trained by David Harrison and one he knows well, can.

"Don't leave Devine Belief out of it," Wolfe said.

"He's a very fast horse that Noel Carter and I bred and we sold it, David Harrison was the victor there.

"It's going to be a very exciting race on Sunday with speed all over the place: Devine Belief, Norwich and Oxbridge.

"We'll have to come off them a bit.

"We might be the class horse, but we're going to need the breaks."

After the Bluff Knoll resumption, Wolfe says it's likely Rope Them In will have one more sharpen up to make sure he was right for the Quokka.

"Hopefully, we can stretch the neck of Overpass, he's been a wonderful horse," Wolfe said.

"He's going to be beaten one day and hopefully we can do it this year."

Rope Them In is $9 with Tabtouch to win the Quokka. Overpass holds $2.75 market lead to defend his title.
