Almost 18 months' preparation will reach its pinnacle (the race wasn't held last year) when the Emma Stewart-trained pacer lines up from barrier two in Friday night's Apco Geelong Pacing Cup.

"When he got the second cup done, I immediately set my sights on winning three in a row," said Zavitsanos, who along with his wife Jo, comprise the leviathan ownership entity Team Zav.

The winner of two Group 2 Newcastle Miles and more than $1m in prizemoney, Mach Dan has endured a rare winless streak of 10 since saluting at Melton in August.

Zavitsanos was circumspect about the eight- year- old's recent form line.

"He has contested races such as the Inter Dominion along with the Victoria and Hunter Cups and unless you draw well in those races it's just too hard to make ground from back in the field," he said.

Zavitsanos is buoyed the good draw provides Mach Dan with an opportunity to return to the winner's list in the small but select six horse cup field.

"I'm really happy with the draw and he is a big chance from there," he said.

"We bypassed Sydney and have deliberately saved him for this race and Clayton (Tonkin) said before the draw that he has been working well.

It won't be easy as there are some nice horses in the race like Keayang Tokyo and Act Now."

Win lose or draw Mach Dan will still hold his status as Zavitsanos' favourite horse.

"He's the one," he said.

"Look, I've probably had horses with more ability, but Mach Dan has raced in the best races for the past four or five years and has won $1m in prizemoney."

Zavitsanos believes Mach Dan should earn legendary status at Beckley Park should he grab first prize on Friday night.

"Friday night is his grand final and I'll be putting it on the club to name the new grandstand after him if he wins," he quipped.

Pre post betting has Mach Dan a $2.70 second elect behind Terang Cup runner up Keayang Tokyo ($2.50 fav) with multiple Group 1 winner Act Now on the third line of betting at $4.

The Marg and Paddy Lee-trained mare Aldebaran Vera will attempt to make it back-to-back trotting cups in the Haras Des Trotteurs McNamara Memorial Trotters Cup off a 20 metre handicap.

The daughter of Trixton is nearing her best form according to driver Jason Lee.

"We had issues with her shoeing in the Final and she didn't take to racing at the different track during the Inter Dominion, but she seems like she is getting back to her best judging on her win in the Ararat Trotters Cup last week," Lee said.

Aldebaran Vera is the $2 favorite for the race ahead of the Emma Stewart prepared Harold Smith ($4.40) and the 40 metre co backmarker Parisian Artiste.
