Boort assignment on the radar for Freddy's new recruit

Six weeks ago Freddy Taiba arrived at his stables to find a surprise new addition to his muster.

Benjamin Said, who assists Freddy Taiba with the day-to-day running of the stable, had long had his eye on the pacer Angus Indiana, who strung together four consecutive wins last year while in the care of trainer Scott Rains.

"I don't think the horse was on the market, but Benjamin kept on his case and stayed in touch with Scott and in the end got the horse," Taiba said.

The seven-year-old duly saluted at Penrith a fortnight ago in his debut for Taiba after sitting parked before finishing unplaced over 1609 metres at Menangle in a mile rate of 1:50.

"He's no slouch and is very tough, so the sprint races don't really suit him," he said.

Angus Indiana will have the opportunity to show his staying prowess when he lines up in Sunday's Boort Pacing Cup over 2612 metres, albeit from an inside second row draw.

Taiba has enlisted the services of the state's leading driver James Herbertson to navigate the tricky alley around the tight Boort circuit.

"He's the master so I'll leave it up to him once they're out on the track," he said.

Taiba expects the early gate speed of the pole marker Collective Works to offset the back row draw.

"Hopefully we'll end up on the back of the leader and the pegs is the place to be around the small track," he said.

Taiba believes the son of Heston Blue Chip will measure up to the minor country cups.

"There is still improvement in him to come and he shapes as a horse to race in the lesser country cups," he said.

The Carson Miller-prepared Collective Works will appreciate the considerable drop in class after finishing fourth behind multiple Group 1 winner Catch A Wave at Terang before sitting parked outside the Emma Stewart-trained Balboa Rock at Geelong last Friday.

The Donna Castles-trained mare Berriesandcherries will be hoping to go one better on Sunday after being narrowly beaten by Wish Upona Dream in last year's Boort Trotters Cup.

Berriesandcherries will start from the 30 metre back mark courtesy of five subsequent wins, while last year's victor Wish Upona Dream is the only other handicapped runner off 10 metres.
