Britton’s take on his Sandown Cup duo

Jeff Britton has two runners in this Friday's $220,000 Sportsbet Sandown Cup – the country's greatest and most storied staying race.

Pass Mark was the best performed of the two having easily eclipsed his personal best time.

"It was a bit of a surprise for me, because we didn't know what to expect," said Jeff Britton on Sky Racing's The Morning Line.

It was his first race for two months, a forced spell due to shoulder soreness. When asked if he could be flat second up, Britton was dismissive of the possibility.

"He's had a fair bit of work at home up the straight here. I don't like trialling too much, I like to give them all work at home, I always think it's a wasted race trialling."

Pass Mark was runner-up to Unreal Speed in the Fanta Bale Stayers in February and has been a regular in many of the country's premier staying events, though is yet to etch a major onto his resume.

"It's his best chance (to win a big race), even though we have to overcome Lady Wilson. The depth of the field isn't what he has been in."

Pass Mark with connections after his Sandown Cup heat win

Britton was clear in saying that Pass Mark is the best chance of his two runners. His other runner Mepunga Surprise will jump from box 1, inside of race favourite Lady Wilson.

"Her preparation hasn't been great, there hasn't been a really good run up (to the series) for her. She's had to run unsuitable distances – her first run back was a 460 (metres) at Geelong."

Pass Mark and Mepunga Surprise are considered the main dangers to Sandown Cup favourite Lady Wilson.

Britton also spoke about Harrison-Dawson place-getter Mepunga Reward.

"I'm looking at going to Queensland this week for the 550m… a 550m would suit him down to the ground."

It would be in preparation for heats of the Cyndie's Magic Thursday week May 29.

He also touched on Weblec Snoop, who was runner-up to the flying Saquon in the Maiden final at Sandown Park last Thursday.

"He ran a terrific race (in the heat) against Saquon. We'll be going to a Pink Diamond event at Geelong."
